MOCKINGBIRD
Mockingbird sings unseen
until it flies away,
unaware the silence
that it left behind,
unaware its many sister species,
from Blue to San Cristobal
unaware the HMS Beagle
and Darwin
to the Galapagos Islands in 1835,
and unaware the part it played
in the evolution
of his theory of evolution.
Like the rest of us,
it does what it has to do
without ever knowing why.
